My Students

Imagine a child holding a professional looking published book that they created. They sit in front of the class and share their story to a captive audience.

My 4th grade students, self titled the Fire Breathing Dragons, are new writers.

Throughout the year they will draft, revise, edit and repeat. They will conference with peers and their teacher. Basically, they will go through the writing process like a professional author. Perfecting their craft will take hard work and persistence. Most students are behind in writing and find it challenging to write a paragraph. All it takes is a spark of interest to spread the writing wild fire. I think the chance to publish a real hard cover book will be excellent motivation for reluctant writers. Why? Because it is so Cool!

My Project

I am requesting book making materials so that each child can publish their very own "Real" book. They will see how this book is just like the ones in the library they treasure. Making a book will provide motivation and a sense of accomplishment. They can share their book with their family and will have a record of their first step in the writing journey.

Students need to feel that their work in important.

I have high expectations and so some students will revise their writing ten or more times. They will get advise from books, peer, students in other classes, the principal... and I feel all that work deserves a REAL published book.
