I'm really glad you suggested this book I literally cannot put it down! It's so good. It really shows me a perspective of how someone else around the same age as me lives their life. Again I thank you for suggesting this book to me!
Inspiring a student, a classroom, a school to love reading is at the top of my list of important things.
The quotation above was sent to me by a student who is starting to understand fall back in love with reading. I want more students to find more books that impact them in this same way. To do so, I need to build a classroom library of great books.
My Project
Our current school library was recently cut by 2/3 and reduced to a small set of shelves in a dusty, old storeroom. Not inviting! Not practical! Over time, students have lost access to great books. And there are no new books on the way. Furthermore, students have access to the internet constantly due to one to one technology. It has impacted our students' reading habits. We have a reading deficit.
I want to build a literacy-rich classroom and school!
If I receive funding, I will add to my own classroom library with both popular and classic works of fiction. I would like to have more books for sure, but I would also like to have three copies of each book. Students will choose a book they would like to read from the library. Because I will have three copies of each book, they can find a few peers to read the book with them. Once they choose a book, students will have to set a reading calendar, read the book in and out of class, and then meet for 15 minutes each class period to discuss the book in a book talk setting. Students will be motivated because of choice and positive peer pressure. There are endless possibilities. Most important, students can fall back in love with reading.
