This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Students within my class face many challenges. They from the inner city of Baltimore and do not have as many luxuries as others. Some students came the first day of school without any supplies or even ready to learn. Thus I had to supply them with items. I need paper and pencils to help these kids!
I teach two classes with 16 students in each class.
They are mostly from single parent households. They are learning in a public, urban school in Maryland. They are between the ages of 6 to 7 and believe that they have seen all of the world. Most of the students are extremely bright but some students around take advantage of that.
My Project
Students come to class everyday without pencils. I have a policy in place for pencils; if your pencil point is broken, to reduce on distractions, you may place the broken pencil in a cup and take a brand new sharpened pencil out of another cup. My students fail to realize that this is the plan because they come to school never prepared. So therefore I let them "borrow" a pencil. Most of the time, the pencils are NEVER returned back and eventually students have to write their classwork up in crayon. But then now my crayons are becoming broken and students decide to throw them out the door and at each other...But that is a whole other story but in the end we need paper to print worksheets on to, paper to draw on, paper to write stories on, and of course pencils to do this with. With your help this will help keep us from having to ask the students' families to buy me and my fellow first grade team members paper and pencils and thus we can teach and learn how to read and write!
Giving my students paper and pencils to get photocopies, to draw, to write, etc will help them develop their writing skills further as well as having supplies we can actually use!
Please help with this project and help these inner city, urban students get the same resources as other schools in the area!
