Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a physical therapist in a school with over 40% special needs children in an Urban City. The children I work with range in diagnoses from mild delays to severe profound delays. There are children that use walkers, manual and power wheelchairs.
The children I work with are not always able to have free movement and some are confined to their chairs during the day.
There are several children that have restrictions with their vision, hearing, movement and cognitive abilities. There are also children that want to keep pace with their peers are not able to because they are delayed in gross motor skills and just need a boost with their balance and strength.
My Project
I will use these items in obstacle course consisting of 3 to 6 parts with groups of 2 to 3 kids at a time or one at a time. Right now, I have home made items that are breaking. The mat will be used for floor activities that require the children to either have their whole body on the floor or just their hands. Right now, I am not able to do floor activities with them. The balance balls will be used to teach protective reactions and improve coordination, reaction time, righting reactions and core stability. They will also be used to increase tone in children with low tone and decrease tone in children with high tone. Stability balls are always a fun time in pediatric physical therapy and at this time I have none!
