I am a 6th grade teacher on the South Side of Chicago. Last year, I saw my students struggle through simple multiplication and division problems that could have easily been done on a calculator. In this day and age, being comfortable with this kind of technology is a must, and math has become more about problem-solving and less about computation. Because of this, it is becoming more acceptable to use calculators to add, subtract, multiply and divide, so that more energy and intelligence can be focused on solving the problem. I saw the issue present itself most prominently on the standardized tests, while students worked hard on the basic math and were unable to even get to the harder, more conceptual parts of the problems. I know many other schools throughout the state allow their 6th graders the use of calculators, and I'd love to give my students the same advantage. I feel that if my students had calculators, they would be able to show the world exactly how smart they really are. As a teacher, I would be able to push them harder and to really challenge them with higher-level math concepts without worrying they'd get caught up with the basics. I am asking for a classroom set of calculators that I could keep in good condition and hand out to my students during math class. This way, I will not have to place the burden on my students' families to find a way to purchase a calculator. Even without this useful tool last year, I saw my students climb nearly two grade levels in math. With a set of calculators, I think they will perform even better!
