Providing Technology in the Aftermath of Hurricane Florence

My Students

My classroom has students that are diverse and live in a seasonal tourist area. I am currently teaching a Computer Science Discoveries Class to 8th graders that includes problem solving activities, webpage design and animation/game design. This is a new class for our school this year and supplies are limited for this new curriculum.

In addition, our school was impacted by Hurricane Florence.

School was not in session for 3 weeks, and additional money for supplies for this class have not been available due to so many other needs throughout our district. Having the hands-on supplies needed for projects in this class that is so important to introducing students to basic computer concepts and career opportunities would be a true blessing.

My Project

In the aftermath of Hurricane Florence, many items have fallen by the wayside, including hands-on technology for our new Computer Science Discoveries class. This class offers students the opportunity to problem solve, create webpages using coding, and to create animations and games. All of this is possible through Code.org.

One missing piece is the equipment needed to provide the hands-on element of this curriculum.

This equipment includes Spheros that students can program using the iPads currently in use at our school to see coding in action. This interaction will spark an interest in computer programming that is lacking in the online component.
