Help me give my students scientific calculators so they can succeed in Geometry and beyond!
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My students seek to attain a rigorous education to prepare themselves for college, community involvement and beyond. They are highly motivated and goal oriented individuals. My students are from the north side of Milwaukee, in grades 9-12.
My students are motivated to learn, but do not have all of the necessary tools.
Geometry is an abstract math that often includes new and challenging objectives. Students are often intimidated by math, but my co-teacher and I strive to make Geometry fun and accessible for all students. Our classroom includes special education students and regular education students in a full inclusion model. Our students are full of zest and have a love for learning!
I co-teach 2 sections of Geometry daily, with an average of 25 students in each class. Currently, there are 10 calculators available to my students. Most of what we do in Geometry requires a scientific calculator. Asking students to purchase their own scientific calculator could place an undue financial burden on families. Providing calculators for use at school will set students up for success.
Calculators will allow students to access difficult material in geometry.
Students also need practice using calculators, because they are not allowed to use calculators on math sections of standardized tests. If students do not have access to calculators when they are learning math content, how will they succeed on a test that might determine their admission into the college of their choice? Not having a class set of calculators is detrimental to the positive and supportive learning environment we seek to create. All students deserve a fully functioning calculator!
