I teach a group of amazing Special Needs students at the middle school level. Each of my students are taught in a self-contained classroom that focused on behavioral and social/emotional supports. Our students spend a majority of their day in this setting and feel safe enough to take educational risks in this space.
With the varied diagnoses in our classroom, many of our Special Needs students are driven to physically move about through the day while they are learning.
Years ago this was frowned upon. However research is now showing us that the more opportunities that students have to move throughout the day, the better and more focused their learning can become.
Flexible seating is a choice provided to students that allows them to work around the room comfortably and focused. A classroom with flexible seating looks far from traditional. It offers students other options beside traditional desks and rows. Basically, it accommodates and differentiates for all types of students. Your donation will provide us with 2 stand up desks with a foot wobble bar and exercise balls to use in place of traditional chairs.
Flexible seating has been proven to increase motivation and engagement in classrooms and it is my belief that it will greatly benefit my diverse group of students!
Some of the immediate benefits of flexible seating include burning more calories, using up excess energy, improving metabolism, increased motivation and engagement, creating a better oxygen flow to the brain, and improving core strength and overall posture. It's no surprise that physical activity is linked to higher academic performance, better health, and improved behavior. In fact, a paper by Matthew T. Mahar, finds that:
"Simple in-class activities can boost performance. Studies suggest that children who participate in short bouts of physical activity within the classroom have more on-task behavior, with the best improvement seen in students who are least on-task initially." Thank you so much for considering my project! It is my belief that it will greatly benefit my students in the coming years!
