I have a very diverse classroom. This is so socio-economically, culturally and academically. My students know that they can achieve anything, no matter their background. However, I must be able to support those students who are already behind-grade level, and are not getting further help at home.
There is not one student in my class that does not love to learn.
I have a wonderful group of students who like school, and who believe they can do anything. I want to be able to support this dream. While many of my students are already taking off academically, I have others who are still reading at a first grade level (or below!). These are the students I want to target.
My Project
My request is designed to help those students who need it most. I am asking for high-interest books that are written below-grade level, so they may grab the attention of my lower students. These books include non-fiction, series (so that if a student finishes one book and enjoys it, the story's characters are waiting for him or her in quite a few additional books), as well as phonics books, so that even the students who are still learning to put letters and phonemes together can have books that are at their level.
Research indicates that third grade is a critical time in a child's development; if a student is behind at the end of primary, they likely will continue to be behind throughout their academic career.
I want to help my struggling students read so they do not have to meet this fate.
