This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Coming from some of the toughest and financially strapped neighborhoods in NYC, our students do not often have the extra money when it comes to making purchases. On a regular basis, our students hear that they cannot overcome where they live, and that this is just the life they will have. A good percentage of our student population reside in live-in shelters or foster homes and do not have regular access to purchasing things such as athletic apparel. Rather than letting a divide happen in our school between those who have access to athletic apparel and those do not, we strive to make a difference. By providing these materials to our student athletes it can change their outlook on not only school, but also everyday life. No student should be ashamed of attending school due to lack of clean clothes to wear during basketball, it is our job as educators to remove this barrier!
My Project
At our school, we have strived to create Lillian's Locker, which is a pantry for our students who do not have access to personal care items and clothing, or lack the financial freedom to make these purchases. Over time, our students have been lucky enough to gain access to personal care items such as deodorants, body wash, soap and many other personal care items. One of the things, when handing out these items that my students have requested is clothes to wear during gym class and/or basketball practice. They often tell me that the soap, deodorant, foot sprays and body wash do not matter, if they keep putting on the same old "busted" shirts. In these candid conversations with my students, they are indirectly requesting that Lillian's Locker get things such as athletic apparel to wear. It is our job as educators to help our students, and with your help we can create a new section within Lillian's Locker, that will address this need. Together we can help my students from head to toe!
