I work with an amazing group of middle school students that are excited about learning! They are in a variety of special education programs and have individualized education plans (IEPs). Many are English language learners (ELL) and a large percentage come from impoverished homes. Students frequently do not come to school with the necessary basic school supplies to function within a classroom and often do not have access to technology outside of school.
As a special education teacher, I work with a team of dedicated teachers whose goal is to provide all students with the instruction and materials they need to make maximum learning gains.
This involves making accommodations to the curriculum so all students have equal access to learn.
My Project
I am a special education teacher in a middle school with many low-income families. My students often do not have the basic supplies needed for their classes. At this time in the school year, the supplies students purchased or were given have been consumed or are in poor shape, needing replacement. Many students do not have the financial resources needed to replace these items.
Students perform best when they have the basic supplies needed for learning.
Though I have materials in my classroom that students can borrow, I do not have the ability to give them replacement items. I have found that the items most students are lacking or that need replacing at this point in the school year are pocket folders and highlighters. This project will allow me to provide my students with new folders for all their classes and a set of highlighters to keep.
When I was a child, I loved new school supplies! This is true of my students as well. When they have school supplies that are not falling apart, they take pride in them, and their work stays more organized.
