Help me give my students a space to reset because many of my students have behavioral issues that force them to be removed from the classroom. The bean bag, weighted blanket, and puzzles would be great for reset.
I love working with students with Special Needs. It makes my job unpredictable and usually pretty exciting. My students have a variety of disabilities (ASD, SLD & EBD) and academic levels, but it does not hold them back from wanting to be like their gen. ed. peers. All of my students are in the 6th grade, however socially, academically, and emotionally they are much lower, many of them falling in the 2nd/3rd grade levels. I would love to be able to provide my students with a space that helps them build social skills, cope with stress, and create positive relationships. All things which they may be currently lacking.
Many of my students strive to develop personal friendships and relationships with their teachers.
Watching them try and build these skills is what makes them so special. To help this, I would love to get them some group board/card games, bean bag chairs, and puzzles. When they are able to work together it can help them build social skills and patience.
My Project
Many of my special ed students struggle with behavioral issues. This makes it difficult for building/repairing relationships and to get them back into the mindset of being ready to learn. Since academics do not come easy to these students, it can become stressful for them when it is time to learn a new skill. This is especially difficult when they are in a heightened state.
Providing them with a place to reset and a place where they can be comfortable enough to build relationships can help remove some of that stresses that come with approaching the day in an academic setting.
I just got a classroom and would like to set up a space that helps my special ed. students thrive as they enter (and progress) through their 6th grade year.
With a space to properly reset and decompress, the students will be more prone to getting back into the mindset of learning. Sensory items like puzzles, weighted puzzles, and fidgets can help my students refocus on their classroom tasks and relax when they become overwhelmed. When the students are calm and focused it helps with building relationships. Watching my students interact with each other while they play board games help with showing teachable moments for interacting with others. The students are observed in a setting where they can be comfortable and without teacher interaction. All of my students have social/emotional goals along with goals towards academics.
