Ms. Miranda from Chicago IL is requesting supplies through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need 100 college ruled composition notebooks and highlighters in 3 different colors to organize, examine and improve their writing.

Did you have have the most insightful thought, then forget it almost immediately? It happens. Reflection is an excellent way to process ones learning. My students will be able to reflect and remember their amazing ideas, insights and learning experiences because they will write them down everyday.
Our school is an urban charter school specifically geared to preparing URBAN BLACK MALES for entrance to and success in college.
Our school faces many challenges including a lack of resources and being located in a community plagued by violence. Our school is situated in one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in the country. Our students come to us from all types of home environments: most live in single parent homes, some have parents in jail or are dead, most receive free or reduced lunch, and many are inundated by the presence of drugs and violence every day. In addition, the majority of them come to us several grade levels behind in reading, writing, math, and science skills.
I have requested composition notebooks and highlighters for my students so that they can reflect daily on their learning. Thinking about what they have learned and connection it to different experiences, classes, individuals will allow them to integrate their new content and skills in to their lives and memories. They won't simply be sitting in class for 90 minutes to engaging their learning. At the end of every class my students will actively assess their own understanding of the material, make connections to it and determine how it will be helpful for them in the future. They will let me know if they found it engaging or easy to master. This way everyone knows how they are feeling about the days learning and it is one more time they engaged with the material. The more they engage the more then remember.
This project is so important because I have 100 students with 100 amazing ideas, insights, questions and thoughts.
I do not have 100 hours a day to discuss with them one-on-one. This way they are all able to participate everyday. Most importantly, they are learning the power of their own thinking. If they see a growth in themselves by monitoring their learning everyday they will be able to be nothing but empowered. Empowered students = smarter students.
