Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Help my students to prove their knowledge of Social Studies topics! There is more than one way to show what you know. The "test" does not have to be the only way. Projects are a creative, fun way to prove they have learned the material.
I teach at a low-income school in Southern California.
Like all schools, we have had our challenges. Little by little, the student and staff dedication has begun to pay off, and our state test scores have been moving up. My students have made tremendous growth in the past few years, but still need to press on.
My Project
As with all students, I find that mine perform better when they experience a little variety in classroom instruction. They enjoy doing something besides reading a book, listening to a lecture, and taking a test. Each unit, they are assigned a small research project that allows them to demonstrate their understanding of the material we have covered. For example, in the upcoming unit on the Renaissance students will research four Renaissance artists and create a presentation board showcasing what they learn. Students will always remember their first introduction to Da Vinci and Rafael because they not only look at beautiful art but also become acquainted with the lives of the artists. I am requesting basic art supplies like markers, construction paper, and glue for students to use in creating these projects. With the current economy, neither I nor their parents can afford to cover the cost of basic materials for these projects.
I tell my students that it doesn't matter what they know unless they can prove it.
Projects allow students to prove what they have learned in an alternative way. Students enjoy the fun, creative ways they can demonstrate their understanding of Social Studies.
