This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are children who remind me of the children that Lin-Manuel Miranda sings about in "Dear Theodosia" from the Broadway musical "Hamilton." They're children who have their father's eyes & mother's name. They're children who 'When they came into the world & cried, they broke their parents' hearts." They're children who "will come of age in nation where others had to bleed & fight for them, so we'll make it right for you!" They're children whose ancestors laid a "strong enough foundation," to pass it on to them & they're children who'll take "the world we give to them," & "blow us all away someday." Many are children who are growing up learning that family is the "foundation" of African American life & history. They're children who know that family, 'will be around for you, do whatever it takes, & make a million mistakes." My students are growing up listening to the lyrics of John Legend & Common..They know "the biggest weapon is to stay peaceful...now we can right the wrongs in history...No one can win the war individually."

My Project
My project is a time to reflect on what it means and why we are "Proud To Be Americans." (Greenwood)
"Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction...We didn't pass it to our children in the bloodstream...It must be fought for, protected and handed on for them to do the same." (Ronald Reagan).
This project will give my students a chance to think about "If tomorrow all the things were gone, I'd hoped for all my life..And I had to start again with just my family by my side...'Cause the flag still stands for freedom and they can't take that away." My students deserve the opportunity to learn why we are grateful for our military personnel and the sacrifices that these brave men and women made when they answered the call "Duty, Honor and Country!" Each year, as a school and community, we come together to honor all who served...and to teach future generations that "All Gave Some and Some Gave All." The materials that were chosen for this project will help my students understand why the 11th hour on 11th day of the 11th month on 1918 has such an important meaning to so many Americans.
