Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach high school juniors and seniors in a college-level intro to engineering class. Many of the students are minorities, low-income and/or going to be the first in their family to go to college. In this class, they learn to use design thinking to identify problems that they or others in their community face. The students then brainstorm solutions, develop their ideas in detail and use advanced technologies to build working prototypes that can make a positive difference in people's lives.
My Project
When my students do projects, they start by talking to people they want to help and identifying problems they can solve for those people. Because the projects are so open-ended, I never know in advance what students will want to build. Therefore, I try to create an all-around well-stocked maker space with a wide variety of tools and materials. The supplies I want to buy in this project will replace some things that have broken over the years (drill batteries and computer mice) as well as add some additional tools and supplies which will make future projects easier for students to complete.
