I teach special education in a self-contained classroom for students who are learning social/emotional and behavioral skills. My students are inspiring. Every one of them wants to be successful in academics, with peers, and with adults. These learners may or may not be behind their peers in academics, but they currently all have high emotional and behavioral needs.
One of the most important tools for a developing student is brain food.
Our school's mission is "We believe, achieve, and succeed!" which means we wholeheartedly believe our students will achieve and succeed in all areas of life. My students are growing at a rapid rate. One of the most important tools for a developing student is brain food. Currently, I am not able to use my school budget to provide students with healthy snacks. The goal of this project is to ensure all of my students have at least one of their basic needs met.
Students who arrive at school having missed breakfast due to missing the bus, lack of access to food, or any other variety of reasons will be able to have a snack containing adequate protein, fat, and calories upon arriving at school, to sustain them until lunch. In the afternoons, when students often begin feeling sluggish and hungry, they will be offered trail mix, jerky, or cheese crackers to increase their energy and brain strength so they may finish out the school day successfully. The classroom teacher and assistant teachers will feel confident offering these shelf-stable snacks that are healthier alternatives to candy, chips, and other high-carb and surgery snacks.
