My students need materials for our cell cycle and skin cancer inquiry lab such as sunscreen options, UV lights, batteries, UV beads and other miscellaneous items.
I work at the largest school in the state with the highest poverty rate, the largest percentage of kids on free or reduced lunch and most diverse. My students range from refugees to homeless to the first in their family to make it through high school. Not only are do my students have the pressure of succeeding in school, they may also have the added pressure of where they will sleep that night or jobs to be at after school hours.
I sincerely believe that students should not leave a Biology class without actually DOING science.
Biology tends to be a very difficult subject for many students, especially my English language learners because it is very vocabulary heavy. I am trying to give my students as many hands on lab experiences as possible. This is helpful to connect content with what students experience. My hopes is that students feel sufficiently challenged yet academically successful.
My Project
I see a major disconnect with students and science. They don't see themselves as scientists and are apprehensive to take necessary in science discovery for fear of getting it "wrong". I want to change this. I want students to leave my classroom with more confidence in thinking like scientists and to even identify themselves as scientists.
In order for students to see themselves as scientists, they need to DO science in my classroom in a memorable way.
I work hard to provide hands on experiences where students investigate their own questions. Students conduct a handful of inquiry investigations throughout the year. If you donate to my project, you will take part suppling materials for our cell cycle and cancer inquiry project. Students will be analyze the relationship between UV radiation, pigmentation and sunscreens/sun tanning lotion. They will plan their own investigation to determine the effect of a variable of their choosing on pigmentation from UV light. Variables the students might choose are brand of sunscreen, SPF rates, type of sunscreen, kids vs adult sunscreen, sunscreen vs tanning oils, etc.
My project is asking for a wide variety of sunscreen materials in order to accommodate the variables students may choose to investigate. This project is particularly significant for our population since Oregon has the fifth highest melanoma rate in the nation but most students never wear sunscreen due to of our overcast weather.
Additionally, I am asking for miscellaneous items for the following reasons:
- magnetic strips to boost vocabulary retention
- lamination paper to save on paper copies
- disinfectant wipes to clean safety goggles
Thank you very much for considering my project. With your help, my students will have a better opportunity to learn, grow and thrive when they leave my classroom.
