Some of our students have physical limitations, cognitive delays, and some have both. These kids have gone through a traumatic event resulting in them being misplaced. Hurricane Harvey flooded our Elementary and part of our High School as well as our students' homes. Our Junior High Life Skills students were moved to the High School where we are teaching/learning in a 9 x 18 room. We have limited resources and are not sure how long we will be here.
Because of cognitive delays and fine motor skills, some of our students do not read while others are unable to write.
They love electronics because it's more fun to learn with visual and hands-on activities.
Our kids are loving and love to be at school. They deserve every chance to feel good about themselves and feel successful. I am so proud of how they have come together and adapted to the situation that was no fault of their own. They are truly special.
My Project
We are very thankful for the iPads that have been donated to help those students who struggle with fine motor and others who need extra help for academic readiness. Use of the iPad is proving to be successful by the improvement we are seeing in their work.
Our special needs class has been using our iPads to learn reading, writing, math, fine motor, speech, science, and history.
They are helping choose educational apps to put on the I-pads which makes them a part of their own learning.
We are currently having to use every plug and cord to charge the iPads during the day in order to utilize them when needed. This has caused a minor problem if the iPads are used at the end of the day. We are unable to keep them plugged in at night because they are locked up in a filing cabinet.
We are in need of an iPad docking station to keep our iPads charged. If we have a docking station, we will be able to use one plug and lock them up in a safe place. We also need screensavers/cases to keep them protected so students will be able to utilize them for many years to come.
