My Students

Pablo Picasso once said, "Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up." We are trying to keep the ARTS embedded in our curriculum while other schools are focusing on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. It's important for us to balance STEM with ART.

Our public charter school is an eclectic mix of middle and high school students working hard to overcome obstacles and achieve success regardless of their personal situations.

78% of our students qualify for free or reduced meals. We have a 0% drop-out rate and a 100% college acceptance rate. Our dedicated staff takes personal interest in helping our students succeed not only academically but socially and emotionally as well. It is our goal to produce well-balanced, productive young adults that have the tools they need to be responsible, contributing members of society.

My Project

These donated resources will enable our students to experiment with a variety of drawing materials with which they would not otherwise become familiar in the public school setting. This drawing start-up set will provide a variety of archival ink pens and envelopes to scaffold and supplement our learning objectives. Using these resources, students will learn to balance the organic nature of creative expression with the structured discipline of the art medium. They will observe several traditional drawing techniques and enjoy a sequence of experimental mixed media exercises. A secondary learning objective is expanding their mark-making ability and maintenance of all studio equipment. Upon completion of each project, students will ultimately gain confidence and strengthen their artistic skills foundation.

With support from Donors Choose, "Protect My Marks" will enable our students to engage in meaningful projects during a crippling survival mode that our regional budget imposes.

Hopefully, a number of students will exhibit their finished pieces throughout their community as a result of this funding. These timeless techniques will buttress students' artistic repertoires as they complete A.P portfolios at the senior high level, and possibly develop the confidence to seek training in college.
