Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

A student needs collaboration with other classmates to develop social and problem solving skills. With "No Child Left Behind" students have been trained to take tests but not to problem solve. They know how to work individually but not collaboratively.

My students are an energetic group of 7th graders taking Pre-Algebra.

Most of them are from a minority group and attend one of the biggest districts in California. They also live in a low income community. A big percent of them qualify for the reduced/free lunch program. Despite the situations in which they live, they are still eager to learn, and when given the opportunity they achieve on goals being set for them. Given the big district and the number of schools in it, the funds that make it to the school are limited. Supplies for teachers and students are hard to obtain.

My Project

I'm requesting colored paper and privacy partitions. These resources will allow me to create engaging group activities that will support problem solving and social skills. With the paper I will create different parts of activities, each with a different color, where all the students in the group will work together in each part and get graded as a group. The different colors will create organization and a better flow for the students to follow. I will also be creating tests with different levels of rigor. Each level of rigor will be printed on different colored paper. This again will help the student be organized. The partitions will be used during test taking where the students will still be seated in groups but will need some privacy to do individual group. These supplies will create organization for me and the students while the students work together in groups and gain the much needed social and problem solving skills.

This project is so important because without the paper I will not be able to organize the activities that I have ready to implement.

The school only provides me with one ream of white paper per week. Buying my own colored paper and privacy partitions is also difficult for me since my expenses take most of my income. With the donations and the activities created with them, students will get the opportunity to work in groups and practice problem solving and use those skills later in life.
