Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a Biology teacher at a Title I school. Many of the students in the school are low income and I want to be able to supply my students with the materials they need, to not only learn Science but also to grow as confident and unique individuals. This means providing lab materials for them. I am hoping the funding from this project will assist with the students' understanding of how science is an important part of our lives.
My students are passionate about many things, but they need to learn how to be passionate about science.
This can't be taught from a textbook. It needs to be nurtured through hands-on learning, and student interaction with the content.
From the gifted to the intensive, they have broad needs I want to meet. In addition to the diversity, I also work at a Title I school, which means many of my students are from low-income homes; however, I have never met a more wonderful and hard-working set of students. They are dedicated and determined to learn. Through their struggles and triumphs, I see our country's future
My Project
Through this project, students will be able to see first hand how water is an intrinsic part of all life, effectively building an understanding of the natural world around us. Most of my students have a complete disconnect from why we need water, other than thirst. The observation and interaction with each property of water (adhesion, cohesion, polarity...) will open the door for this understanding. These 8 Transformative Properties of Water Kits will be a huge part of their learning along with two KIT 3-D WATER 6 CUPS.
My students will be able to use hands-on learning in order to expand their knowledge about the world we live in and how microscopic science understanding is related to the macroscopic concepts we know so well.
Students will be able to manipulate water to visualize the concepts and see how water can break down, dilute, stick, and move so much of the world around us. Additionally, it will teach students to inquire as to how and why things occur in the world around us. These materials are a great way to show students how to solve problems and evaluate their own work/learning.
