Our school is phenomenal. We have a focus on STEM and the design cycle, and we are in this amazing transition phase from a small, traditional school to a high-tech, problem-solving, student-centered learning space.
Students love coming to school because they are engaged, involved, and participating like crazy!
Students at our school have many needs. A large minority have free and reduced lunch status, about a third do not have access to technology from home, and many are experienced in trauma and learning disabilities. The staff is amazing, though, and do what it takes to make sure everyone can learn!
My Project
As a computer teacher, I'm trying to instill in my middle school students the concept of proper computer ergonomics (posture), and in order to sit at the right height for this, many of them are too short to touch the ground.
When students' feet dangle without a footrest underneath, nerve damage can occur.
We have had guest speakers (chiropractors) come in and have a lot of success with discussing this with the kids, but their main concern was the damage that can occur because of how their feet dangle.
This is a battle I have been fighting for years, and I have started to ask parents and the community for donations of foot rests to avoid this problem. So far I have enough for most of the classroom, but donations have stopped and I still need eight more. I would LOVE to make sure every student (especially my smaller 6th graders) have a foot rest to ensure that they can learn and apply what they've learned about proper computer ergonomics.
