The students at CES are in kindergarten through fifth grade in an economically diverse urban school. My students are funny, charming and hardworking. As a school, we strive to help foster both the intellectual development of our students as well as their social and emotional development in order to help them grow to be their very best selves.
This project will support my school's mission to ensure that all students feel welcome and included by providing all students, staff, and visitors the opportunity to wear a button that clearly defines their pronouns.
My Project
Transgender people and those that identify as non-binary experience significantly higher rates of depression and suicide compared to their cisgender peers. We know that these students also experience higher rates of harassment and bullying which can lead to poorer academic outcomes. Creating an inclusive school environment for students, families and community members that identify as transgender or non-binary can mitigate some of these risks. This begins by normalizing the fact that gender identity is more fluid than previously understood. The ChiButton Badge Maker and button refill packs will allow for quick and easy creation of pins that state: "my pronouns are..." or "ask me about my pronouns" or will simply have "he/his," "she/her" or "they/them" on the pins.
