Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Laws alone can not secure freedom of expression; in order that every man present his views without penalty, there must be spirit of tolerance in the entire population." ~ Albert Einstein
As diverse students with disabilities that live in communities that are plagued with stereotypes, it is imperative that they learn about their ability to be upstanders and promote and exhibit tolerance and acceptance.
My students are energetic and fun inner-city high school students. My students have a range of disabilities including learning disabilities, visual impairments, autism and intellectual disabilities. A majority of them are also English Language Learners. My students show greater enthusiasm when learning is interactive, interesting and includes technology.
My school is located in a large, urban city. Of our 3,100 students, 94% are low-income, 10% of the students have disabilities, and 8% are English Language Learners. More than 75% of my particular students are low-income, have disabilities and/or are English Language Learners. I teach my students not to let their personal home situations, English Language Learner status or disabilities hinder their academic or social emotional growth.
My Project
Throughout our identity unit, students will reflect on their experiences with stereotypes, bullying, racism, sexism and other forms of labeling. Students will learn about the importance of defying and dispelling myths and stereotypes by using their voices and visual images to empower themselves and others. Students will learn about the importance of promoting acceptance and tolerance by serving as upstanders when they have the opportunity to do so.
Unfortunately, my students know what it is like to be put down, treated less than, or ignored due to their disabilities, sexual orientation, race, or socioeconomic status; this project will empower them to stand up for themselves, and others, in a positive way.
Students will use the computer to create inspirational messages, videos and visual art that promote tolerance which will be displayed throughout the building.
They will promote diversity by making peace dolls (individually designed dolls made with yarn while students discuss and reflect on anti-violence and change) that will be exhibited in a main hallway. Having their work presented will encourage students to verbally promote peace and tolerance as their visuals and messages are displayed for the entire student body to learn from.
