In September, I will be teaching a great group of students in the social-emotional/behavioral disabilities program at my school in Boston, MA. Excel is part of the Boston Public Schools system and many students are on IEPs or are considered English language learners. Many will be from immigrant/refugee families. Students are part of the free lunch program.
My students are amazing.
I bet every teacher says that on this site. It's almost like we're parents and we all think our kids are the best. Mine truly are. My students come to school everyday, knowing it is a safe place to take risks and achieve great things. Some are fighting with emotions that they can't control. Others are learning how to identify strategies to overcome their disabilities, while we teach them that nothing can hold them back with hard work and determination. Others are just looking for a safe, warm place with a hug and food to put in their bellies.
My Project
I am requesting a set of stools so that students can comfortably gather around a single table during their problem-based learning units. We are a small group so being able to gather around as a single team is extremely important. These stools will provide a different type of seating than a regular classroom chair. Students will also use these if needed to move around the room to different stations. I am also requesting two bean bag-type chairs to use in my reading nook. I want students to be able to use this space to 1.) crack open a good book and become lost in it, but also 2.) choose to sit there to complete work when a regular desk just isn't working for them.
I plan to create a collaborative work environment so my students will have choice options for seating.
The definition of tolerance is a willingness to accept feelings, habits, or beliefs that are different from your own. I hope through flexible seating, I can provide a different way to collaborate, communicate, create and learn. Thank you for reading about my request!
