My students need garden beds and supplies to help us with our project: turning a desolate, abandoned garden in the back of our building into a beautiful, sustainable community vegetable and habitat garden.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are truly exceptional! They work hard to succeed. They persevere when faced with a challenge, creatively inspire our community, and believe in one another. They are tomorrow's leaders and world-changers. They are our future and together we can help them reach their dreams. More than 100% of our students receive free or reduced-price breakfast and lunch. They come to a low-income Title I school every day where resources are very limited. Some of our students are unable to purchase supplies and the school is only able to do so much with the budget they have. Our students strive to do their best!
My students are energetic, smart, and motivated to succeed.
Even though they come from a variety of backgrounds, including race, religion and family structure, we all work together to create a unique learning experience, instilling a love of learning and exploring that will last a lifetime. Many of our parents work multiple jobs and are unable to attend school events, therefore parents are missing out of their student’s success.
My Project
Our community garden project will help kick off our 4th and 5th grade students' school year! We will work together as a community of eight classrooms (178 students) to turn the barren area in back of our school into a sustainable vegetable and habitat garden. Garden beds are needed to fix or replace existing ones along with gardening supplies such as weed barrier fabric for maintenance. We are also requesting a monarch migration station.
Using teamwork we will brainstorm, research, propose, design and execute our plans for turning our school into a bountiful, beautiful place to learn, while also inviting parents to join in on our STEM project.
Students will, quite literally, "dig in" and be part of each step along the way, from researching winter crops, writing and presenting proposals and measuring and graphing our garden spaces, to filling beds with soil, planting seeds, labeling crops and following through with all of the daily maintenance that a garden needs. We have a area with four old, pre-existing raised beds that need to be replaced. We have no other supplies yet to help us begin or sustain this STEM project.
This garden will hopefully provide healthy vegetables for us to enjoy and donate to those in need, but more importantly it will be an engaging process through which our students and families will learn teamwork, perseverance, experiential learning of grade-level standards, and the rewarding benefits of hard work that come from following through with a long-term plan. We even have ideas of how to continue this project by turning it into a habitat garden and collaborative work-space in years to come. Thank you for considering helping us with our project goals!
