My Students

I tell my students every day, "Make the world a better place because you are here," with Kindness being one of our core values.

I start every class by reading a picture book each day.

I can't believe how my students connect with our read alouds, how they volunteer to share their connections and thoughts. Often I say, "You might think you are the only one who feels this way, but you aren't alone. Each of us feels this way." And then I read "The Rabbit Listened" and share how sometimes we just need a friend to listen to us, or "The Remember Balloons" and that each of us is making memories to hold on to.

My students show growth in their social and emotional health, and together, we know we are not alone. All of this from reading just one picture book a day. I consider it the most important part of our day.

My Project

My students LOVE our daily classroom picture book read aloud. And I would say they NEED it.

They can't wait for me to read to them at the start of class.

They ask, "Can I share?" when we finish, before they leave the carpet and return to their desks for their quick written response.

"You might not be yourself sometimes, but deep down you are always yourself," wrote one and, "Don't be afraid to face your fears," wrote another, in response to our read-alouds.

My students love to look back at books we've read, as they reference them often. Reading one picture book day is the best decision I ever made.
