Help me give my students an opportunity to safely learn how to handle food, categorize, shop, and provide safe real life experiences to prepare them for independence and adult living.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I have thirteen exceptional young adults in my high school and transition classroom. In addition, I co-teach with the vocational coordinator and I have 1 teacher’s assistant and two aides who work with my students’ behavioral needs. My class is a self-contained, multi-needs room with varying disabilities such as Developmental Disabilities, Intellectual Disabilities, Autism, Downs Syndrome, Behavior and Emotional Disorders, Communication Disorders, etc. Our school is in a low-income, poverty-stricken area where funding is not always available. We constantly focus on our students’ needs to become independent young adults.
My ambitious young adults require a great amount accommodations and hands on experiences to work on vocational tasks and independence for their adult years.
My young adults require materials to be hands-on to provide real life experiences. Each day my students are learning a variety of subjects such as: math, language, reading, writing, banking skills, real life problem solving, and vocational task work. My students work within the school doing jobs such as crushing pop cans, shredding paper, running the snack cart, and recycling. Some students work at sheltered workshops and a local thrift store. Please consider donating to these aspiring young adults to make them successful their future.
My Project
These items will provide my students with safe and real opportunities to practice life skills, vocational training, and preparing them for adult hood.
The cutting board activity will allow my students to practice knife skills in a safe environment to practice holding a knife, properly cutting food, and categorizing items in the kitchen.
Some of the other activities will provide opportunities for my students to safely fulfill orders, read a menu, promote safe kitchen skills, and social opportunities. Melissa and Doug kitchen sets allow for a unique way to help lower functioning students, and provide opportunities to experience real-life scenarios in the kitchen.
