Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My high school students attend a Title 1 school, are predominately African American and are excited about their future! They have diverse backgrounds, knowledge, influences, and interests. My job as their teacher is to create a classroom community that can connect them to each other and prepare them for the world beyond our school's doors.

They are athletes, bookworms, musicians, artists - and, most important, students that are willing to learn.

They have the right to be exposed to text that is relevant to who they are today.

My Project

"Dear Martin" by Nic Stone was published in 2017. It was blurbed by John Green as 'A powerful, wrenching, and compulsively readable story that lays bare the history, and the present, of racism in America'. After reading the novel and following the author on her social media accounts, I knew this was a story that needed to be taught in class. The relevancy of the content material makes it an exceptional read especially for the beginning of a spring unit right around Martin Luther King Jr day or Black History Month.

I want my student to read beyond the classics for relevant themes that affect them in today's world.

Traditional literature is incredible, but so is modern literature! We as teachers have focused on the winning curriculum with the stories of yesteryear for such a long time. I want to give new novels the opportunity to shine and become classics in their own rights.

Working in a Title 1 environment is rewarding because I am able to give the students insight into subjects and works they may not have opportunities to experience. However, funding is limited and I often do not want to bother my administration to adopt new texts when we have class sets of other texts (classics, of course) and need other things for our students such as supplies (paper, notebooks and even technology). Therefore, it is my duty as their teacher to seek out means to bring in texts such as Dear Martin for them to consume.
