Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My 1st grade students are a diverse collection of children from different socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds at a Title I school. Hailing from Mexico, Vietnam, and Nepal, we have become a cohesive unit, dedicated to learning and becoming great citizens.
My students are voracious readers who get very excited about reading new books and improving their scores.
They have a wide range of interests, including non-fiction and fiction.
We are working hard to create a community focused on mindfulness, hard work and laughter. Together, we can accomplish anything.
My Project
One area my students struggle with is working independently. Students rotate through five literacy centers daily while I am working with different reading groups.
It is very important that my students have quality activities to do independently while I am focused on a small group of readers.
The Simple Word Locks help students understand CVC words in an engaging way. The Magnetic Word Building Short Vowel boards have pictures and letters that help students work as a team to build words together and will work perfectly for the beginning of the year. The Magnetic Digraph Building Boards will help the students as they improve their knowledge of sounds. The Giant Classroom Timer will help students to monitor their work time as they go. The Trace and Write Story Stencils have a topic and key vocabulary words to facilitate independent writing. The Word Family Flip Books help students to understand the spelling patterns in words and how they are related. Each item reinforces essential common core skills in reading and writing.
