Promoting Preteen Literacy

Help me give my students the opportunity to read one of the greatest works for adolescents from the 20th century, "The Giver."

My Project

My students are unique and special because of the challenges they face. So many of them have been able to rise above adversity, whether that's challenges at school or home life. COVID-19 has impacted their learning because they miss in-person class time during their 5th and 6th-grade years. Those two years are such an important time because of the transition from elementary to middle school, as well as the transition from childhood to adolescence. Some students have struggled with this transition and are readjusting to in-person learning and expectations.

By reading "The Giver", by Lois Lowry, the students will be able to observe an adolescent close to their age who is challenged with making significant choices for his society.

Students will see how he faces those challenges and why he takes certain actions. Students will be able to relate to the protagonist and his decision-making by thinking about what they want for their future and the choices they make that will affect it.
