Our students are good, hard working students in a rural county. Our county has a high level of poverty, impacting funds available for classroom expenditures. Even though we are in a poor area, our students have the same goals and aspirations as students everywhere. They simply have a different, many times longer and more difficult path to achieve their goals.
My goal is to help them achieve academic success so that higher education and career options are available to them.
By offering academic and career options to successive generations the cycle of poverty can be reduced and ultimately broken.
I am a middle school math teacher and interventionist in a rural school. I am requesting classroom calculators so that I can strengthen students' technology skills. Many struggle solving problems on paper, but also lack the skills to properly input information in a calculator to solve them. Half of their year end test is calculator active and to be successful on the test they must know how to properly input information.
I also am seeking a subscription to Scholastic Math so that students can read (literacy integration) and solve real world problems.
Real world examples are much more engaging for them, and more likely to spark participation and response.
