My students need iPads to be able to access literacy programs in the classroom.

"Never Give Up!" is something you will hear my students chanting in the classroom throughout the year. I teach second grade reading in a Title I school, in Washington DC, where 100% of my students receive free lunch. The challenges my students face as 7 year olds are surreal, however, they consistently rise to meet these challenges head on. At the beginning of the school year we discuss how learning to read might not be easy, and there are going to be times we want to quit, but no matter what, we need to make sure we "Never Give Up!"
My students beat the odds every single day.
Statistics says that the majority of my students won't be reading on grade level when they enter 3rd grade and will continue to fall further and further behind. This is why I think it is so important that my students build a solid foundation in literacy. Despite these statistics, 90% of my students leave second grade reading at or above grade level. They are closing the achievement gap and showing everyone how important it is to "Never Give Up!"
It can be difficult to come by technology resources for our first grade classroom. My students need ipads to be able to access different literacy programs. We specifically use Lexia Core5 to help develop our reading skills. My students love this program and it has boosted their reading ability so much! Unfortunately, due to the high demands of ipads for all classrooms in our school, we often are not able to access this program because of the lack of technology.
Technology is vital to the growth of my students as readers and future test takers.
Testing now requires students to be able to interact with technology in various ways, and I am hoping to familiarize my students early with using technology in an academic setting.
