My Students

I want to enrich my student's lives. Too often we use the same materials we have always used and those materials are worn out.

I teach 8th grade Science.

I have Four classes of gifted students, and two lower science classes. We are a magnet gifted and talented school based in North Carolina. Our school is in the high poverty area. As a former Language Arts teacher I am trying to promote literacy in the science classroom. Science has its own language....if students learn the vocabulary they do better in class.

My Project

We use our current worn out dictionaries daily. Whenever we encounter a word we don't know....someone looks it up and shares with the class. However, our current dictionaries are missing pages which makes it hard to be the first one who has the correct answer.

I am trying to teach children to be better readers in the science classroom and to instill that learning is lifelong.

Reading and literacy is important in any subject, and it's important that students are not limited to textbooks in their classroom.
