Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My classroom is a Bilingual 2nd grade classroom. My second graders attend a public school in an urban district. It is a Title 1 school and 100% of the students qualify for free or reduced-lunch.
My students are eager to learn and I am amazed at what they have learned in the few short months they have been with me.
They enjoy learning English and sharing their language skills with me. They all work hard and I love that even though something is tough for them, they will still persevere. My students are a good group of kids and I want to give them a high possibility of success.
My goal is to make their school experience meaningful and fun, while also setting high expectations and providing a safe, loving environment for each student.
My Project
Students today struggle to stay in their seats - using the traditional classroom seats shows that we expect students to stay still for too long in school! Having flexible seating options in my classroom will help all my students to continue learning, while meeting their need for movement. With this project, students will be able to choose where they sit to complete their independent work - on a wobble stool, a wobble cushion, a bouncy ball, a bean bag, or even laying on the carpet with clipboards.
When students are provided with a choice as to where they do their work, they are more engaged and thus more likely to make good choices and get more work done!
The flexible seating that I have chosen for my classroom will allow my students to take charge of their own learning. Making sure my students are comfortable in our classroom will motivate them to work harder, and will ultimately give the students that struggle to stay in their seats an opportunity for movement while still learning.
