Promoting Kindness, Inclusion, and Diversity in Pre-Kindergarten Students
Help me give my students books that promote self-awareness and the power of our actions, like "What Should Danny Do?" which allows students to see the results of their choices on themselves and others.
Our program is committed to helping the smallest learners gain BIG skills. We teach a blended classroom made up of typically developing pre-k students through the Voluntary Pre-Kindergarten (VPK) program blended with students with special needs through the Primary Exceptional Education Preschool (PEEP) program. What we love about our program and students is that they learn from each other to become better learners with improved character. Our PEEPs students have been identified with one or more disabilities that include: Autism Spectrum Disorder, Developmental Disorder, Language Impairments, Speech impairments, Behavioral Disorders, and Physical and Health Impairments. In addition, all of the families in our program are identified as low socioeconomic status and do not have access to resources that could greatly improve their skills.

Our students need access to books that will teach them about self-awareness and the acceptance of diversity. By using appropriate literature that opens their minds to kindness, mindful mantras, and diversity, our students will not only develop as learners but as respectful and sensitive members of their community.
My Project
Our earliest learners come to school to not only learn their ABC's and 123's, but to learn about others. These students want to understand how to interact appropriately with other students and teachers but haven't been taught how. They want to make friends and understand the differences among their peers and they need experiences and instruction in how to do that. My students will be able to identify with the characters in these books and learn from the character's experiences. By seeing themselves in the curriculum, my students will see themselves as learners and their actions as important. I will be able to teach my students about self-awareness and their ability to impact others with kindness and acceptance through the use of these books.
When our earliest learners understand kindness, acceptance, and diversity they will be able to learn anything!
The students that I teach come from communities and homes that do not always provide their children with empathy and kindness. Their communities and homes do not always empower children with the idea that they are learners and their actions are important. I want to instill in my students that we can all be kind and that kindness should be celebrated and spread.
