Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My class consists of forty-one males and fifty females. Ninety-two percent of the students in my class are on a free or reduce priced lunch program. Most students come from a blue collar working family. We are in a high poverty location. My class is an essential way for them to be exposed to an engineering field. Project Lead the Way inspires students to seek a career in a STEM field. My class has many diverse nationalities, of which 60% are Hispanic, 30% African American, and the remaining 10% are other races. I have students who are English Language Learners and will benefit from the hands-on learning that they might otherwise not receive.
My Project
My students are learning about creating designs and prototypes in our Project Lead the Way class. They know how the engineering design process works and how to develop their STEM projects from sketches to real-life prototypes. The next step with our lessons is to teach my students about financial literacy.
Having a heat press machine accessible to my students will help give them business insights.
My students will be able to create designs on shirts and mugs that they will then sell to sustain a profitable business. We hope to start our business by selling our items directly to parents but hope to get local businesses involved in the future. They will learn about buying items, making a profit and in turn use the profit to purchase consumable materials like CO2 dragster cars, balsa wood for gliders, and materials to make ice cream during our Science of Technology module. Having a heat press machine will also allow us to display school pride by promoting our school with the various items designed by our very own students displaying our school name.
