My students need a document camera.
Mathematicians like John Paulos and social activists like Bob Moses proselytize about the dangers of math illiteracy as the real modern-day obstacle to equal access for our students. Tools that allow our students to engage with math in novel ways are a must for cultivating meaningful understanding.
Our students are nothing short of exceptional.
They seek entry to the most competitive colleges and are brimming with aspirations for their futures. However, the realities of attending a public school in an urban setting are sobering. Our collective carrot is the classroom climate we create and the shared notion that each student has something worthwhile to contribute. We believe in the concept of inquiry-based learning and are driven to develop mathematical autonomy in all students. Ours is a classroom where rather than struggle to find real-world math applications, we ask how math relationships can help refine and sharpen our perspectives on our realities. Our students represent every walk of life, every culture and every faith but are similar in that they demand the absolute best from one another and certainly from their teachers.
The ELMO digital document camera we are requesting is deceivingly simple as a concept but will have a profound impact on class culture and routine. This device allows us to project in high resolution, any document, any image or any object that we choose at a moment's notice. Gone is the notion of the teacher as the source for all content knowledge. Instead, student work, media clips, manipulatives, graphing calculator screens; all become fodder for meaningful discussion and analysis. Students are excited at the prospect that their thoughts and ideas are the true basis for what is learned in the classroom.
My students and I are firm believers that we are living in an age of unprecedented change and technological progression.
Now, perhaps more than ever, students seek validation that their thoughts and ideas matter. The ELMO image projector offers instant affirmation that student work is integral to the learning experience and gives validity to the notion that technology should be used to enhance, rather than supplant our interactions.
