Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are phenomenal. We have a very average mix of ability levels, but what stands out about our kids is their determination and grit. This tight-knit group of kids is also extremely compassionate and generous. They worked hard last year organizing several supply drives and doing volunteer work to benefit their community.
They are inquisitive go-getters who are eager to be successful in life, despite any personal hardships they may have had to overcome.
Our school population is 70% economically disadvantaged and 60% Hispanic. Although our area is technically a suburb of Houston, some parts of our district are still very rural. Our school is a unique program in the district and is still pretty new. The students take college classes while still in high school and are able to graduate at the end of four years with an Associate's degree. We have an extremely limited budget that provides for the basic supplies that we need; however, we frequently don't have a lot of money left over for enrichment supplies that really help connect the students with the concepts we teach.
My Project
We don't have a physical library on our campus and though we have access to the college library next door, they have limited titles that students can read. Even though I teach science, I still love promoting reading! One way that I can help do that is by starting a STEM science-themed library in my classroom. First, I'd like to focus on building a solid collection of nonfiction environmental-themed books so I can have them as a resource for my Environmental Science classes.
With all of the pressing environmental issues we face daily, I believe it is important for my students to be well informed citizens who understand theses challenges as well as the challenges that future generations will face.
My students are extremely interested in the environmental topics we talk about in class, so I'd like to be able to provide the books for them to expand their knowledge. I'd like to purchase 30 nonfiction titles on various environmental themes including climate change, pollution, population growth, sustainability, resource use, and much more! I know that having paper copies of books for students to borrow will help promote literacy and increase the amount of reading our students do on their own time.
Last year was tough with Hurricane Harvey and a lot of change, so we're doing everything we can to make our school have the best learning environment possible!
