Many of my freshmen will be the first of their generation to attend college. They are intelligent, compassionate, and driven young people who are truly gifted and insightful. They have worked hard to overcome the obstacles they've faced to simultaneously tackling getting a high school diploma as well as an Associate's Degree within five years as this rigorous early college program.
Most of the students at this school come from families that struggle financially.
Yet that does not stop them from striving to be both globally aware. They believe in their ability to make a difference, and be the change. Some do not come from ideal home situations, and I am continually inspired by their resilience and work ethic.
My Project
The silicone bracelets will be utilized as part of a Mix it Up at Lunch event the freshman are hosting as part of a project based learning of Social Injustice through reading ,"To Kill a Mockingbird" Students will issue bracelets to vendors and visitors based on things they have in common (i.e. if you are from another state other than North Carolina you would get a green bracelet).
This is part of a campaign to promote conversations among strangers of different cultures in order for them to realize we all have more in common than we thought.
During this event, the students will also be highlighting and presenting their presentation on what the student body can do about various social justice issues such as domestic violence, bullying, and access to education.
