Promoting Compassion and Kindness Through Picture Books
Help me give my students books that will help build community and compassion. Books such as Zero and Each Kindness will facilitate discussion and foster reflection on how actions and words impact others.
We are a fourth grade class in a suburb of Kansas City, Kansas. My students walk into class full of energy every day.
They are kind-hearted young people, already demonstrating kindness and compassion beyond their years.
Our school is participating in the Second Step program aimed at developing problem solving, empathy, and life skills in interacting with others. I am excited to see where this program takes them.
I have introduced a variety of opportunities to broaden their horizons and build on their strengths. They are embracing the challenges and rising to the occasion.
My Project
I am wanting to use picture books to help grow kindness within my classroom which will foster a positive learning environment.
The world needs more compassion, and I’m wanting to use picture books to promote it within my fourth grade students who can take it out into their lives and create a ripple.
Sharing read aloud books such as Zero, Mango, Abuela and Me, and Red, A Crayon’s Story will help facilitate a community that will impact not only the learning of the students within my classroom but carry over into their everyday lives beyond the walls of our school.
