Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are enthusiastic about learning and are faced with many challenges both at home and at school. My students live in an area of high poverty and are performing well below grade level. My students are special because they enjoy learning in many different ways. Each student is unique and has an amazing smile. My students are enrolled in a dual language program so they learn in English and Spanish every day! This enables many students who speak Spanish at home to be more successful in school. My students are energetic, motivated, and ready to learn!
My Project
My students often work collaboratively to solve math problems and practice skills they have been taught during whole group instruction. By doing collaborative work my students work on social skills as well as practicing math skills. I have requested hands-on games and tools for my students to use to practice skills we learn in first grade. The ten-frame carpet activity will enable my students to use large counters to fill the ten frame to practice counting, addition, and subtraction in a hands-on way. The sea games will help them practice counting and manipulating numbers up to 100, making ten, etc. The pocket chart and stand will help my students to do some of the matching games we currently have in the classroom and have a way or organize their work. We use different games to match numbers with pictures, solve addition and subtraction problems, and make fact families.
My students need more engaging and fun educational games to play with their peers during collaborative work time.
During math class students receive instruction in small groups and spend the rest of class working on adaptive digital software, completing independent work, and practicing skills they need to work on in collaborative groups. My students enjoy playing educational games with their peers to practice math skills and these tools will help make this goal possible.
