Promoting a Love of Reading Through Book Clubs

Help me give my students access to books that will help them apply the reading strategies they've learned and give them exposure to new genres.

My Students

This year I'm teaching in a Title school with an approximately 50% free and reduced price lunch rate. I teach in an IEP Cluster class that is made up of a very diverse population. I have multiple students on individualized education programs as well as many students who speak multiple languages. All of my students have different learning needs, but they are enthusiastic about being in school and learning.

I have a fun and energetic group of students this year!

They are excited about learning and love reading and discussing books that they've read.

My Project

Later this school year we will be reading the book "Holes" as an instructional read aloud. I teach this book using the C.I.A Approach/Read Side by Side approach, which allows students to collect important information about the story, interpret this information to discover the author's message, and then apply this message to their own lives. Following the instructional read aloud, which is a grade level text, it is important that students use the same approach in a novel at their own reading level. I have requested 20 copies each of "There's a Boy in the Girls Bathroom", "The Great Gilly Hopkins" and "The Janitor's Boy".

These book club texts will allow the students to read the same genre that we are working on as a class on their own at their "just right " level.
