My students need access to a collection of quality, culturally relevant texts in order to promote reading and to reinforce a culture of inclusion, diversity, and tolerance.

My Students

The ELL population at our elementary has been steadily growing in recent years. Our students have home languages including Cantonese, Persian, and Spanish. The families of our ELs are hard working, and care a great deal about their students' education, but are limited by language, transportation, resources, and access to technology at home, and culturally relevant books.

Even with the above being said, the capabilities and heart of our students are far from limited!

I've had the pure privilege of looping with these dynamic youngsters, as their ESL teacher, for the past three years as they grow and progress through our K-5 building. Through this project, I plan to help them continue to grow!

My Project

"Research shows that students read better and read more when they read culturally relevant books" (Y.Freeman et al., 2003; Goodman, 1982; R.Jimenez, 1997b). It is critical that teachers of students of diverse populations have access to a variety of texts to breakdown stereotypes and build a culture of diversity and inclusion. Having a culturally diverse library serves all readers, not only EL students.

Culturally relevant titles will provide students an opportunity to personally connect to texts by being able to compare characters and events to their own families and experiences.

In the past, culturally relevant titles were difficult to find; but today, the selections available are increasing. "Reading the world always precedes reading the word, and reading the word implies continually reading the world" (Freire 1987).

By choosing to support this project, you will help our school community promote inclusion and tolerance through the beginnings of a culturally diverse reading library. These titles will be a featured section of our school library, which serves students grades K-5, in the entire elementary building. So access will reach farther than just our ESL classroom. The ESL students will read and review texts to feature in our new section, and publish these in a print display in the library to promote the reading of these titles in our greater school community.
