My 30 students need a class set of "The Kite Runner."

I teach 9th grade students (typically 14-15 years old). My school is in an extremely low socio-economic area. Over 40% of my school's students receive free or reduced-price lunches and only 50% of their parents have graduated from high school. We have implemented a new special education focus at our school that will help those students succeed.

Honors English should be a course where students are challenged intellectually. By reading "The Kite Runner" my students will not only be challenged intellectually, but they will learn about middle eastern culture as well. In our community we do not have a lot of diversity; therefore, by reading books such as "The Kite Runner" they are able to experience a part of the world in their own community.

In order to help my students gain this real world experience, I am requesting a class set (30 copies) of "The Kite Runner." Reading this book will not only be intellectually stimulating, culturally diverse, but it will help to prepare them for college level reading.

Your help will ensure that my students receive every opportunity possible to build their literacy skills. If we can empower students in the 9th grade, imagine how we could empower them when they reach 12th grade. Maybe more students would go on to college if they felt more successful during their high school years. Your help will ensure their success.
