This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am teaching a wide range of classes this year including three classes of English as a Second Language to students who are mainly refugees from throughout the world and three classes of AVID which is a college preparatory class for students who will be the first members of their families to attend college (most of these students are second language learners and refugees as well). Around 84% of the students in this school are on free lunch due to the high poverty level and they live in a neighborhood with the second highest crime rate in the large city we live in. My refugee and ESL students have mostly only been in the United States for two years and speak very little English and have experienced truly horrible situation in refugee camps. They usually have no or very little formal education before entering the 9th grade in the United States.
This year, I am in a classroom with very limited technology. I only have a teacher computer and do not even have access to a dry erase board or chalk board. All of my students need visual instruction as well as oral instruction as all of my students do not have the language skills used in standard English usage. I am in a very difficult position because I know what my students need to be successful and I am unable to provide this for them. I am making way too many copies which is causing them to become frustrated with the amount of paper they are receiving.
I would love to have an Epson projector which would allow my students to learn visually. My AVID students need to prepare for college by receiving daily SAT questions to help raise their scores. Both groups of students need serious assistance to boost their vocabulary. Additionally, we would be able to watch videos which correlated with the material we are learning in class to aid in better comprehension. This projector would be used and loved daily in my classroom.
With your help, we will be able to provide my students with visuals to help their learning become more effective. My ESL students need to be able to see power point presentations and grammar activities. My AVID students need to be able to complete work to help improve SAT scores, other test scores, and create and present their own power point presentation, etc.... Most of my students want to go to college and they need technology to be able to do so. There is no possible way I can afford this on my own and I know that with your help, we would be able to change the lives of hundreds of students a year by giving my students the gift of a language and making the dream of college a reality.
