Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Every Friday afternoon since we founded Wilson Prep almost four years ago, the entire school community -- students, faculty and staff -- assembles in our large multi-purpose room for "Town Hall." During Town Hall, we regularly hold ceremonies on the family room stage to honor student achievement; special guests, such as actor Danny Glover and author Art Rodriguez, speak to our community; theatrical and dance presentations are given by both students and visiting performers; student leadership reports to the community at large; and graduates return to speak of their experiences in college. Town Hall is invariably both edifying and interesting, and it is an absolutely central, unifying element of our learning community.
Town Hall very often features a media component -- a video on the civil rights era, say, or slide-show of art created by our students, or PowerPoint presentation of a teacher's or former student's college experiences -- that requires some sort of projection screen on the wall behind the stage. We haven't had the funds for a large enough screen, so we've made do for the past several years with a donated home slide-show screen (much too small to be seen by four hundred-odd people in Town Hall) or we've improvised by taping white butcher-paper to the wall. From time to time we've rented a large projection screen, but the rental cost is prohibitive for regular use.
As a result, the critical visual element of some of our potentially most compelling Town Hall experiences -- such as PowerPoint presentations on college life by our returning graduates -- often leaves much to be desired. Students and staff alike find themselves squinting at a too-small screen, or at the murky resolution of a jury-rigged paper screen. In short, the lack of an adequate screen regularly compromises the impact, appeal and potential of Town Hall.
