My students need a multimedia projector so that we can access the internet and other media for whole class learning.
Imagine how difficult life would be if you did not have access to the Internet or never learned the skills necessary to use it. This is the challenge that my students face. They see this priceless resource at their fingertips but cannot to gain access to it because of their socioeconomic status.
My students are a small group of low-income African American middle school special education students attending a charter school on the south side of Chicago.
Approximately 93% of students at my school are low income and many do not have regular access to computers or the Internet. All of my students have learning disabilities which vary in type and severity but all are learning at least 2 years below grade level in all subject areas. Their specific learning needs require them to be taught in ways that are different from those used in a regular classroom and methods often need to be more dynamic and interactive in order to reach these students at their level. However, these students are fun loving, curious, and enjoy exploring and learning in new and different ways.
With a multimedia projector in the classroom, my students will have access to all the resources available on the Internet to supplement what we are learning in class. This includes visual representations, further information, and interactive components that will engage them experientially, making the material more likely to stay with them. This Internet access will also allow students to learn procedures of using the Internet, vital skills for any member of society today. For example, I could demonstrate to them how to research a given topic using multiple search engines and how to evaluate different sources to determine the most relevant and reliable ones. Or we could practice filling out a job or school application, much of which is done online today. Images projected from the computer screen for all the students to see would allow them to take a greater role in the process and better prepare them for the experience of doing these things on their own.
This project is very important to my students' future success, as well as that of students who will use my room in the future.
This community is not one in which technological resources are readily available and school may be the only place where students are able to learn these very important skills. The goal of public education is to prepare children for adult life no matter where they come from. This technology is common place in wealthier schools but no less necessary in this one.
