Our students are a full spectrum with a diverse campus in race, culture, socioeconomic status and interests. Our campus serves approximately 635 students, grades 7th thru 8th and between the ages of 12 to 14. Ethnically our students are approximately 87% minorities with 45% being Latin American, 26% African American, and 13% Asian and Pacific Islander. 25% of our students are currently an English Language Learner. At our school, we have 10% of our population receiving services from our Special Education department. We have students coming from all over the district including many who are also English language learners. Our students come from a variety of cultures and socio-economic levels which means that many students have trouble getting access to certain things.
We are trying to incorporate other academic subjects in with our PE classes such as health, writing and the science behind the body.
We are hoping that this will help students understand the food choice and health choices they make today affect their lives tomorrow.
As we approach the rainy season, I would like to spend some of our time teaching a nutrition lesson or a lesson that teaches about the human body. Having a projector that works in the auditorium would be very helpful. If we have a projector, we could be working on lessons about health and wellness. We currently don't have a projector for PE, and we have to borrow the projector from the library. This projector is old and mostly use for meetings. This means that if there happens to be rain we are out a projector for the lesson. I also would love to start projecting instructional videos about Yoga, Jazzercise, and Tai-Chi. This would help widen our PE curriculum opening new options for our teaching.
We are hoping to make sure we are including writing, math, and science activities in PE.
If we are able to include some of these subjects we are able to create cross subject pedagogy.
